Mission
Miss Sugarman's School for Extraordinary Children is dedicated to providing high-quality early childhood education that honors each child as a capable researcher, natural artist, and active constructor of knowledge. Drawing from Reggio Emilia and Montessori philosophies, we create nurturing, carefully prepared environments where children explore their genuine interests through play, hands-on discovery, and emergent learning experiences. Our educators serve as co-researchers, documenting children's learning journeys while supporting their development of essential social-emotional skills, early literacy and numeracy foundations, and creative expression through multiple ways of knowing—including visual arts, music, movement, and storytelling. We partner with families to build an inclusive community that celebrates each child's unique developmental timeline, cultural background, and individual strengths, fostering independence, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning that prepares children for future academic success.
Vision
SSEC envisions a world where youth have equal access to learning experiences that cater to their intrinsic needs, encourage natural curiosity, and provide developmentally appropriate opportunities for hands-on discovery. For preschoolers, this means creating nurturing environments where they can explore through play, develop social-emotional skills, and establish foundational literacy and numeracy skills at their own pace. Drawing from Reggio Emilia and Montessori philosophies, we view children as capable researchers and natural artists who construct understanding through meaningful exploration. Our carefully prepared environments, featuring natural materials, invite investigation and creativity. Teachers act as co-researchers, documenting learning journeys and building on each child's genuine interests.
Children express their understanding through multiple ways of knowing, including the visual arts, music, movement, storytelling, and mathematical thinking. Art serves as both a creative expression and a language for communication and exploration across all learning areas. Miss Sugarman's School for Extraordinary Children recognizes that preschoolers thrive with caring educators who understand early childhood development and the importance of movement, music, and peer interactions. We partner with families to support each child's growth within our diverse, inclusive community while expanding our enrollment to meet the growing demand for high-quality early childhood education.
Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed around children as natural learners, who are curious, creative, and capable of making amazing discoveries. We believe that children learn best when they can explore their interests, ask questions, and express themselves in various ways. Drawing from proven approaches like Reggio Emilia and Montessori, we create a warm, well-organized environment filled with natural materials and open-ended activities that invite exploration and creativity.
Children learn through play, hands-on experiences, and real-world activities that build independence and confidence. We honor each child's unique way of learning—whether through art, music, movement, building, storytelling, or mathematical thinking. Art isn't just a fun activity here; it's one of the many languages children use to share their ideas and make sense of their world.
Our teachers act as learning partners, carefully watching what sparks each child's interest and building on those discoveries. We document children's learning journeys through photos, artwork, and observations, making their growth visible to both families and the children themselves. This approach naturally develops the creativity, problem-solving skills, social abilities, and love of learning that will serve children well in kindergarten and beyond.
We work closely with families to create a caring community where every child's background and perspective are valued. Our goal is to nurture confident, capable children who see themselves as artists, thinkers, and caring members of their community.
